Information

Don your blindfolds and put on a harmonica holder, because blind is back in Southern California! Get ready for SoCal's first blindfolded cubing competition since 2018. Blindsolvers of all experience levels are welcome!

Competitors should read the Competitor Information tab. Spectators may attend for free, but due to room capacity limitations, guests should be kept to a minimum. Since blindsolving requires a high level of concentration, all attendees are required to be silent during blindfolded events. Guests and competitors may socialize freely in Haines Hall Room A28, on the same floor as the competition venue. All attendees are required to read the COVID-19 Safety tab.

The registration fee for competitors is $25, and there is a limit of 30 competitors. All competitors must read the WCA Regulations. Pay particular attention to Article B: Blindfolded Solving.

We'd like to emphasize that blindsolvers of all experience levels are welcome to compete! If this is your first blindfolded competition, here are a few important things to know:

  1. For blindfolded events, the competitor lifts the cover off the cube, not the judge!
  2. If you're judging a blindfolded event, don't place the paper between the competitor and the cube until after the competitor applies a turn to the cube. This is because a competitor is allowed to remove their blindfold and look at the cube again if they haven't applied any turns.
  3. In rounds with cumulative time limits, the judge writes how much time the competitor uses during a DNF attempt on the score card, e.g. DNF (1:23.45).
  4. A stopwatch must be used to time attempts longer than 10 minutes.

We're excited to see how much the SoCal blindsolving scene has grown over the past few years! Please feel free to reach out to the organization team if you have any questions. If you can't attend this competition, the organizers are planning a 2-day quiet competition at UCLA in mid-August, so stay tuned!

If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or if you have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 10 days, you may not attend this competition. If you have already paid the registration fee and you cannot attend the competition due to COVID-19, please contact the competition organizers for a full refund.

In accordance with UCLA's COVID protocols, all attendees must wear a mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status. (Previously, we were only requiring attendees who were not up to date on vaccines to wear masks. We have updated this policy to reflect changes to UCLA's COVID protocols.) Food is discouraged inside the venue; competitors should eat outside if possible.

The competition will be located at UCLA in Haines Hall, Room A44.

Click here for a map of campus, including parking structures. Parking Structures P4 and P5 are located close to the venue. The cost for one day of parking at P4 is $14 and the cost for one day of parking at P5 is $20. For more information about costs and payment methods, see the "Parking Rates by Location" and "How to Pay" sections here.

Alternatively, consider taking a bus to campus. LA Metro, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, and Culver CityBus all operate routes that stop at UCLA. Consult Google Maps for transit options.

While guests are permitted, we request that competitors keep guests to a minimum. (This is due to room capacity limitations—we have nothing against spectators!) Guests are required to read the COVID-19 Safety tab. Note that unlike most cubing competitions, blindfolded competitions are generally not spectator friendly. Since blindfolded events require significant levels of concentration, all attendees, including guests, are required to be silent in the competition venue during blindfolded events.

To ensure competitors and guests can socialize freely without disrupting the competition, we have reserved a second room, Haines Hall Room A28, on the same floor as the competition venue.

There are several places to eat on campus within a 10 minute walking distance from the venue. For a list of restaraunts on campus, click here; the hours are updated weekly, so check the page again a few days before the competition. Most of these restaurants are in Ackerman Union, which is in grid square E4 on this map.

An unofficial round of team blind will be held after lunch! Team blind is a collaborative event in which one cuber solves a 3x3 blindfolded according to instructions called out by their non-blindfolded partner. Detailed rules can be found on this page.

Please fill out this form to register for the event. If you have a partner, make sure they also fill out the form. If you don't have a partner, the organizers will attempt to match you with one using the contact email you provide on the form.

The format of the round will be Best of 3 and the time limit will be 10:00.00 cumulative. Contact the organizers if you have any questions about the rules. Results will be posted on this page after the competition.

Time limit

If you reach the time limit during your solve, the judge will stop you and your result will be DNF (see Regulation A1a4).
A cumulative time limit may be enforced (see Regulation A1a2).

Format

The format describes how to determine the ranking of competitors based on their results. The list of allowed formats per event is described in Regulation 9b. See Regulation 9f for a description of each format.
