Welcome

For those of you new to cubing - WELCOME! This competition is fine for cubers of any age and experience. We just ask you to be aware of these basics before coming to compete.

First, please be familiar with the WCA Regulations. Of course, those regulations contain a lot of legalese, so we have a a few videos made specifically for new competitors, just to show the basics of competing. These videos will explain most of what any cuber competing for the first time will need to know.
* Speedcubing Canada New Competitor Tutorials Playlist (from 2023)
* Chris, Kit, and Lauren's WCA Competitor Tutorial (from 2015)

Note: There will also be a competitor tutorial at the start of the competition - see the schedule tab.

For those interested in more of the B.C cubing community, see Vancouver's own cubing facebook group.
There is also a PNW (Pacific Northwest) cubing facebook group.

FAQs

Q: What will the competition look like?
A: A competition usually runs throughout the whole day where cubers meet up and have fun, although you are more than welcome to stay the whole day or leave whenever. You will compete in events you have signed up for and have the choice to cube at a waiting table.
Q: Who is allowed to compete?
A: Everyone, from all ages are allowed to compete! Do not be hesitant if you are not experienced with cubing or competing, we encourage newcomers to come along, we will help out.
Q: Whose cubes do I use?
A: When competing, it is ideal to use your own cube. Make sure you have one ready to go when it is time to compete. Equipment like timers will be there to compete with. (The competition will not supply you with cubes to compete.)
Q: How do I check the results of the competition?
A: There will be a website: WCA Live to check concurrent results throughout the day. Official results will then be posted the following days of the competition.

Do not be intimidated by all these rules and expectations. Competitions are for everyone to have fun! If at any time during the day you have any questions feel free to ask us!

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at heewonhwangcubing@gmail.com.

Competitor Duties

Particularly if you are newer to competing or to judging or need that refresher after being out of competitions for so long, please read the WCA Competition Tutorial before coming to the competition to learn for the first time or simply be reminded as a more experienced competitor about the procedures for both competing and judging. There are also tons of tutorials on YouTube if you prefer to learn that way.

All experienced competitors will be scheduled by the organizers to serve as judges and scramblers. Schedules will be posted at the venue and found on the back of the prepared name tags on the day of competition.
We kindly ask that everyone tries to out by judging, scramble or run, in order to keep pace with the day.

Keeping the venue as tidy as possible will be a great help as well.

Serving in these essential roles - including on the spot invitations to both competitors and attendees to assist the organizer as co-runners - makes for a smooth and excellently run competition for all.

Thank You.

Unofficial Event - ScramBLD

ScramBLD is an unofficial event which will be held during lunch time at Cubing Around Metrotown 2023. As an unofficial event, these solves will not be recorded on your WCA profile, but results from this event will be updated on this page after the competition.

What is ScramBLD

The idea of ScramBLD is that you will be given a pre-determined scramble to memorize a solution for, and you will need to be able to solve it while wearing a blindfolded at the competition.
You do NOT need to know a blindfolded method such as Old-Pochmann or 3-Style for this event.

A random 3x3 scramble will be generated and emailed to competitors who sign up for ScramBLD a few weeks before the competition. Between this time and the competition, competitors can do whatever they want with the scramble. This includes going through solutions with their normal speedsolving method, and finding FMC solutions on software such as Cube Explorer. Ideally, the competitor would also practice solving the scramble blindfolded.

At the competition, competitors must bring a blindfold to compete in scramBLD. When the competitor says they are ready, the judge will lift the cube cover and normal WCA inspection begins. The competitor must put on their blindfold before putting their hands on the timer at the end of inspection. The competitor then attempts to solve the cube blindfolded with their memorized solution. ScramBLD is a bo3 event, meaning you will have three attempts with the same scramble, and the best time will be ranked.

There was a prize for the fastest overall single.

The scramble for this competition was:
B2 D2 L2 U' L2 U L2 U' F2 R' D2 F D F2 L U2 R F'
