The Holshouser Building is circled in red. Plenty of parking is available, however please follow any instructions fairgrounds staff give you regarding parking. See the Parking Map below:
Room Details: The competition will be held in the Gov. James E. Holshouser Building.

-Saturday Check-In will be at 9:15am (after bigBLD)
-Sunday Check-In will be at 7:30am. If you already checked in on Saturday, you do not have to check in again on Sunday.

  • If you are competing in 4BLD and/or 5BLD you must arrive by 7:30am Saturday (even if you are only doing one of the events)
  • If you are not competing on Saturday, you do not have to come. However you are more than welcome to come watch!
  • Competition t-shirts are available for purchase via the T-Shirts tab. Shirts will be distributed during Competitor Check-In

No extra shirts will be ordered so if you want a one you must pre-order one.

Multi-Blind Cube Submission
If you are competing in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind you must submit your cubes at 4:40pm on Saturday. If you need to use some of your multi-blind cubes for FMC, we can work that out, but please talk to use first. You can email us here: NC Championship Organizers

Venue Quiet Time
During blindfolded events and 3x3 Fewest Moves will be Venue Quiet Time. These events require a lot of concentration and we want to respect those competing. During Venue Quiet Time we will ask that if you are inside the venue that talking and any other noise is kept to a minimum. If you are causing a distraction to those competing you will be asked to leave. The times of Venue Quiet Time are clearly labelled on the schedule.

Expectations and Clarifications

  • You are expected to be familiar with the WCA Regulations and Guidelines. Article A is most important for speedsolving events
  • You are expected to help judge. You must judge for at least one group of every event you compete in.
  • If you want a refresher on how to compete or judge you can read the WCA Competitor Tutorial.
  • You must NOT talk about scrambles or what specific algorithm(s) you did while the event is still in progress. This is considered cheating and grounds for disqualification (Regulation 2g3)
  • Make sure all screens of any cameras or phones you have on the table are facing away from you and do not touch them during the attempt, otherwise this will result in a DNF (Regulation 2i2). Electronic/bluetooth cubes (ex. Giiker cube, GOcube, GAN356i) are not permitted under the same regulation.
  • Please treat the venue with respect, pick up any trash, and leave the venue better than how you found it.
  • We are not responsible for your belongings or puzzles. Keep track of your own belongings/puzzles and be respectful of others and their belongings.

Spectators/Families

  • Spectators (parents, siblings, friends) are allowed to come watch for free. No prior registration required.
  • Flash photography is NOT allowed in the venue as it is very distracting.
  • It would be wonderful if we could get some volunteer help from the parents. This would require either being present at the judging tutorial or to have someone teach you how to judge later in the day. Judge for however long you'd feel like. It's an excellent way to make the time fly by!

North Carolina State Champion Eligibility
If you think you may have a chance at being crowned North Carolina Champion in any event, please bring some form of ID with address or proof of residency in North Carolina. The title of state champion is unofficial and is not recognized by the World Cube Association or CubingUSA.

Live Results & Schedule

  • You can find live results for the competition on WCA Live. A few days after the competition the results will be uploaded to WCA officially.
  • We reserve the right to alter the schedule in any way. We may alter the number of competitors proceeding to the next round. We may eliminate a round altogether. This all depends on if we run ahead or behind of the planned schedule.
  • We may start a round early. Please make sure you are at the venue at least 20 minutes prior to an event you are competiting in.
  • We will be using regulation 9p3 for all final rounds. If you are not present when a final starts, you will be withdrawn from that final.

People You Should Know
Your organizers for the competition are Cady Shields, Carson Claud, Roxana Johnson, and Zachary Ochs.
Your delegates for this competition are Cady Shields, Jacob Ambrose, and Katie Hull. Ask them if you have any questions throughout the day!

For those of you new to cubing, WELCOME!

Even though this competition is a State Championship, we wanted to let you know this event is perfectly fine for cubers of any age and experience. We just ask you know a couple things before coming to compete...

First, please be familiar with the WCA Regulations, found here:
https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/regulations/

This video will help explain most of what any cuber competing for the first time will need to know. It is highly suggested that parents watch this video as well.

A written competitor tutorial can be found here.

If you have any questions after this video, we will be having a new competitor tutorial in the morning of the competition. That would be the perfect time to ask those questions and clear up any confusion.

If you are stoked to compete and ready to sign up, head over to the registration tab, click register, and fill out the information it asks for. This will help you get set up the WCA's system and one step closer to your first official solve!

Additionally:

  • Please bring some for of identification. This will be used to verify your name, birthday, and nationality. (something like a passport or school ID).
  • Please be familiar with all of WCA's regulations, most importantly Article A. If you have any questions about the regulations, feel free to ask us.
  • In each event we will have rounds. We will take the top competitors on to the subsequent rounds. After a round is completed results will be entered into WCA Live. Your name will be highlighted if you made it to the next round.
  • Each round will be divided into groups to help them run more efficiently. We will call the groups in order, along with a last call. Please come bring your solved puzzle up and wait in the competitor waiting area whenever your group is called. We are allowed to deny you the ability to compete if you do not come up by the last call.

Click the FAQ tab to find the answers to commonly asked questions.

We are working on getting shirts for the competition through Custom Ink. We will update this tab and send out and email once we have the order open.
Shirts will be distributed during Competitor Check-In.
No extra shirts will be ordered. So if you want one you must pre-order one.

A: Competitions are a bunch of tables where nerds like us get to sit and discuss our favorite thing, Cubes! Of course in addition there is competing, which will occupy one side of the competition hall, where you will see lots of timers flickering with contestants new personal bests. Most competitions have a break for lunch, and the competing is split up into groups, as to better organize who competes when. (Check the Groups tab and listen at the competition for more info on this.)

Q: How do I find results?
A: All results are posted on the WCA page a couple of days after the competition finishes. However, for the day of the competition, go to WCA Live to find information about current events. This is also where you will find information about the 2nd and 3rd rounds of events. Results have to be entered in by hand and will not appear immediately on WCA Live, please be patient with us as we work to upload results as quickly as possible.

This competition is cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

To help limit the number of people in the venue, we ask that competitors bring no more than 1 or 2 guests with them to the competition.

As of April 23rd, 2020, Governor Copper has released the steps necessary to re-open the state. We are in close contact with the NC State Fairgrounds, our venue, about only holding this competition if it is safe to do so. We are hopeful that the North Carolina Championship 2020 will happen in September as planned. Organizers will make a final decision whether to hold the competition or not in early August. If the competition is cancelled a full refund will be issued.

We are working on ways to have additional safety and disinfecting protocols for this competition. At this current time, we plan to make hand sanitizer widely available to competitors and competition staff (plus hand washing!). We plan to disinfect the solving stations at regular intervals and allow competitors to do additional disinfecting if they would like to. We are asking that competitors limit the number of guests they bring to the competition to only 1, and at most 2 guests.
Our venue is 13,600 square feet, the capacity of this room is over 1,000 people. We plan to keep our capacity under 400 people (spectators included). This will allow for less crowding. We plan to have circulation fans and windows/doors open to allow air to circulate through the venue.

If you have suggestions on how we can make this competition safe please email us: NC Championship Organizers

As always please visit the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services for the most up to date information on the virus related to North Carolina.
Visit the Center for Disease Control here.
