New Competitors
For those of you new to cubing, WELCOME!
We wanted to let you know this event is perfectly fine for cubers of any age and experience. We just ask you know a couple things before coming to compete...
First, please be familiar with the WCA Regulations, found here: https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/regulations/
This video will help explain most of what any cuber competing for the first time will need to know. It is highly suggested that parents watch this video as well. Check out the FAQ below to answer other questions. We will be having a new competitor tutorial in the morning of the competition. That would be the perfect time to ask any remaining questions and clear up any confusion.
General Information
- Please arrive no later than 15 minutes before your first event.
- Please bring some form of identification. This will be used to verify your name, birthday, and nationality. (something like a passport or school ID).
- All competitors are expected to be familiar with the WCA Regulations
- Each round will be divided into groups to help them run more efficiently. We will call the groups in order, along with a last call. Please come bring your solved puzzle up and wait in the competitor waiting area whenever your group is called. We are allowed to deny you the ability to compete if you do not come up by the last call.
- You are expected to help judge/run during the competition. See your group assignments to find out when you are needed.
- Spectators (Parents, sibling, friends, etc.) are able to attend at no cost. No prior registration is needed.
- No flash photography. The flash is very distracting to the competitors.
- Please treat the venue with respect, pick up any trash, and leave the venue better than how you found it.
- We are not responsible for your belongings or puzzles. Keep track of your own belongings/puzzles and be respectful of others.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How fast do I have to be to compete?
A: If you can solve a cube, then you should compete! We recommend that you check out the Events and Schedule tabs -- if you can make the time limit for the events you want to compete in, then you're fast enough! Loads of people come to competitions just to beat their own personal bests, and meet likeminded people, with no intention of winning or even making it past the first round.
Q: Do I use my own cubes to compete?
A: Yes! Make sure to bring cubes for all events you are competing in and look after them -- you don't want them to go missing.
Q: What are some examples of puzzles that are not allowed?
A: Electronic cubes (such as Giiker or Gan360i), carbon fiber stickers, significantly damaged stickers, faces missing stickers (note: completely stickerless cubes are allowed), cubes missing pieces. Please see Article A of the regulations for more details.
Q: When should I arrive?
A: We recommend that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your first event is scheduled to start. This will give you enough time to register, find a seat, and warm-up. If you are a new competitor, we highly recommend that you show up for the introduction to competing which is held at the beginning of the competition.
Q: When can I leave the competition?
A: You are more than welcome to leave whenever you want. If you have no more events left, then you are not required to stay.
Q: Can I come only to spectate?
A: Yes! Spectating this competition will be free for everyone.
Q: How do I register?
A: First you need to make sure you have created a WCA account. You can do this by going to the sign-up page and creating an account. Once you have created the account and confirmed your email address, follow the menu bar to the Register page and follow the instructions carefully.
Q: If I am no longer able to attend, what do I do?
A: The first thing you need to do is tell us as soon as you know via the contact link on the General Info page. Competitions generally fill up quite quickly, and letting us know that you can't attend means we can add someone from the waiting list.
Q: Are there different age categories?
A: Nope! All competitors compete together. Competitors of all ages and skill levels are welcome.
Q: What are groups?
A: To make the competition run smoothly, we call up competitors in small groups to compete. Listen for your group number to know when to bring up your solved puzzle for competing. You will be able to find your group assignments on the "Groups & Live Results" tab sometime the week before the competition.
Q: Can I help with anything?
A: Yes! We always need help judging, running, and scrambling. If you are still around at the end of the competition, we would also appreciate help cleaning up and moving tables back into their regular position.
Q: Besides competing, is there anything else I need to do during the competition?
A: We ask that everyone help out with judging, running, and scrambling during the competition (exceptions are made for very young competitors). Check your group assignments to see when you have been asked to judge, etc. Also, please pick up after yourself to help keep the room clean.
Q: I'm a parent, what can I do to get involved?
A: If you're looking for something to do, then you can certainly help out with the running and judging! We pretty much always need help with this and they are really easy procedures to follow. You can come to the introduction to competing where we go through all of it there. Running is also great for step count and requires zero knowledge of cubing if you're worried about that!
Q: How do I find results?
A: All the results will be found on this page a couple of days after the competition, once they have all been checked and uploaded. If you are looking for live results, in the Menu Bar at the top go to "Groups & Live Results."
Q: Who do I ask if I have questions?
Our delegate is Zachary Garber -- if you have any questions during the competition about the rules, ask him. If you have any questions about the competition in general, talk with one of the organizers (David Graham, Steven Andryzcik, and Jared Baker).
Q: When is the last day to change events?
The last day to request a change of events is April 11th 2020.
Q: Why am I on the waiting list?
Your name may be on the waitlist if you have not yet paid for the competition or if the competitor limit has been reached. If you have paid please give us 24 hours to approve your registration as this is done manually. If you are on the waitlist due to the competitor limit being met, you will be notified on or by April 11th informing you that you did not make it off the waitlist and issued a refund.
Group information will be provided during the week prior to the competition.
A link to the Live Results will be posted before the start of the competition.
This competition will be sponsored by TheCubicle.us! Thanks so much to them for their continued support.
