What are series competitions?

Series competitions are when two competitions happen one after the other, with a different competition on each day. You may only register for one of the two competitions and are not expected to attend the other day.

Normal registration procedures applied. However, if a competitor registered for more than one competition in the series, we will only accept the registration that is paid earlier.

The events and schedule for each competition in the series is different.

What competitions are in these series and which one is right for me?

Saturday is Falkirk Open 2026: this competition is perfect for competitors who have been to competitions before and know what to expect, or anyone interested in competing in some more adventurous events. This competition is open to anybody to attend and all competitors will be eligible for medals.

Sunday is Falkirk Beginners 2026: this competition is especially targeted towards first-timers and inexperienced competitors, with a comfortable events list and lenient time limits. This is a great opportunity for beginners to compete in a relaxed environment amongst other people of a similar experience level. New Competitors

To register, make sure you have created a WCA account by going to the sign-up page and creating an account. Once you have created the account and confirmed your email address, follow the menu bar to the Register page and carefully follow the instructions.

If you are a new competitor, please make sure to:

  • Familiarise yourself with the WCA Regulations by watching this tutorial for new competitors video. We will also be holding a live tutorial on both mornings of the competition.

  • Bring some form of ID with you such as your passport, driver's licence, or birth certificate. Expired ID or photos of ID are both accepted.

Information for All Competitors

  • Schedule Changes: Please note that the schedule is subject to change up until the Wednesday before the competition. Any major changes should be communicated in the precompetition email.

  • Please help judge! As a competitor, your judging assignments are the absolute minimum you should be doing to help out. Since second rounds, third rounds and finals have no assigned judges, we really need people to help out whenever available for these. If you're a parent you can also get involved with running and juging, it's really easy! We will have a judging tutorial in the mornings as well, which will run through the process and will be tailored towards parents who want to get involved.

  • No flash photography anywhere in the venue.

  • If you are a spectator, please never stand further forward than the front row of spectator chairs.

Alternative parking is the Talbot St and Union Rd public car parks, both free and both only a 5 minute walk from the venue.

Bus/Train: There is a bus stop (Charing Cross) immediately outside the venue with regular services from Falkirk. Falkirk can be easily reach by train from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and further afield.

Plane: Edinburgh airport is closest (approximately 1 hour by public transport, 40 minutes by car/taxi) with Glasgow airport just a little further away (2 hours by public transport, 45 minutes by car/taxi)

Disabled Access

There are 2 disabled car parking spaces immediately outside the venue. There is a ramp to access the building with the ground floor (with main hall) being fully accessible. There is a first floor balcony with additional seating overlooking the main hall, however, this is upstairs with no disabled access available.

Visiting the UK from overseas

If you are travelling from a Visa-exempt country (including USA, Canada and Australia) or from the European Union you may now need a valid Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Holders of Irish passports or legal residents of Ireland are exempt from this requirement.

This can be applied for via the UK Government website here.

Accommodation

Small independent hotels (visitfalkirk.com/places-to-stay is a useful local resource) and Airbnbs can be found within walking distance in Grangemouth.

Larger chain hotels such as Premier Inn and Travelodge can be found a few miles away just outside Grangemouth and also in nearby Falkirk, all easily reached by car, bus or taxi.

Nearby Grange Manor Hotel is offering competitors discounted rooms on the nights of 20th and 21st February (£119 per room per night) and 22nd February (£99 per room per night) with prices inclusive of full Scottish breakfast. Please call 01324 474836 or email info@grangemanor.co.uk, and mention 'CUBING'.

An Asda supermarket (open 24 hours) is right next to the venue. Domino's pizza, Costa Coffee, Greggs and Subway can all be found within a few minutes walk.

Falkirk Science Festival is proud to partner with the inaugural Falkirk Speed Cubing Competition, bringing together STEM learning and competitive puzzling in an exciting new event.

As an annual celebration of innovation and discovery, the festival supports activities that inspire curiosity and mental agility - making speed cubing a perfect fit.

This collaboration highlights Falkirk as a growing hub for science, creativity, and inclusive learning, and marks a new chapter in community-led STEM engagement.

Each event is run in groups, determined by how many people are competing in that event. We will call up the groups either one or two at a time depending on how many stages we have at the competition (which you can see on the Schedule tab). Odd groups will always be on the left stage and even groups on the right stage. Your scrambling and judging assignments are the minimum amount you should be helping out as it only is for first rounds. We always appreciate extra help!

Please note down which groups you are competing and scrambling in before arriving at the competition!

Groups

Groups will be available on competitiongroups.com after registration closes.

Time limit

If you reach the time limit during your solve, the judge will stop you and your result will be DNF (see Regulation A1a4).
A cumulative time limit may be enforced (see Regulation A1a2).

Cutoff

The result to beat to proceed to the second phase of a cutoff round (see Regulation 9g).

Format

The format describes how to determine the ranking of competitors based on their results. The list of allowed formats per event is described in Regulation 9b. See Regulation 9f for a description of each format.
