Information

This Fewest Moves competition is part of CubingZA's South African National Championship for 2023, but is being hosted in three separate venues across the nation, namely Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban.

Please note that only the 3x3x3 Fewest Moves will be held officially - this is not an ideal competition for newcomers or those who only know speedsolving. Fewest Moves is comprised of 3 separate 1-hour attempts to solve the cube in the lowest possible number of moves. By WCA regulations, the puzzle must be solved in 80 moves or less in order to be a valid attempt, otherwise the result will be DNF. If you cannot solve the puzzle in 80 moves or less, please consider not registering for this event.

In between each attempt to break up the day will be breaks where we may compete in some unofficial relay events, like 3BLD relays, Guildford or Mini-guildford challenges, team-solving, or 2x2-7x7 relays. More information will be released about these closer to the competition.

GUESTS

Please note that guests and spectators are NOT welcome at this competition, unless special arrangements have been made prior to the event with the competition organisers (for example, for younger competitors that require a parent or guardian present). The venues are small and there must be absolute silence for the duration of each attempt.

During the two breaks between Attempts 1 and 2, and between Attempts 2 and 3, we will be hosting some unofficial relay competitions which will have some fun prizes!

1st Break: 11:50-12:20 (lunch break). 2x2-7x7 relay. You can enter as an individual or as a team. As an individual, you will solve all 6 puzzles one after the next. If you enter as a team, you can divide which team members solve which puzzles and in which order. As a team of 2, for example, someone could do 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5, while the other team member will do 6x6 and 7x7 when their teammate finishes. A standard 2x2-7x7 relay should take 15-20 minutes with scrambling, so there will still be plenty of time for lunch.

2nd Break: 14:10-14:30 (tea break). Mini-Guildford Challenge. This is an event where a single attempt is defined as solving all "Average-of-5" puzzles one after the next. This includes all WCA events except 6x6, 7x7, FMC, and any blindfolded events. As above, you can enter as an individual or as a team, and divide puzzles between all team members.

2nd Break: 14:40-15:00 3BLD relay. If a location has enough 3BLD solvers, we can do a chain of 3BLD solves in teams of 3, 4, or even 5.

All unofficial events will have some spot prizes for the winners at each location, and the winners nationally across all locations will also receive a more significant prize and bragging rights!

Time limit

If you reach the time limit during your solve, the judge will stop you and your result will be DNF (see Regulation A1a4).

Format

The format describes how to determine the ranking of competitors based on their results. The list of allowed formats per event is described in Regulation 9b. See Regulation 9f for a description of each format.
