Public Transit

The Roundhouse is right by Yaletown-Roundhouse station on the Skytrain Canada Line. It is also accessible by many buses. Please check Translink's alerts and plan your trip accordingly.

Food

Many food options are available nearby

If this isn't your first competition, you will be assigned some judging and/or running duties throughout the competition. You will only be assigned these tasks in events that you're competing in. If you don't know how to judge or run, make sure to come to the competitor tutorial at the start of the competition. These duties will be on the back of your name tag (explained in the competitor tutorial), so please be aware of when you're expected to come up and help. This is required to keep the competition running smoothly and on time, since it is purely run by volunteeers. For non-first rounds (ie 3x3x3 round 2) there are no assigned duties, so if you see an empty juding seat then please come up and fill it.

We also ask that you keep the venue as tidy as possible as possible - please put garbage/recycling/etc in the appropriate bins when you're leaving.

If you need help or are confused about any of these duties, just ask an organizer or an experienced competitor and they can explain.

Welcome

For those of you new to cubing - WELCOME! This competition is fine for cubers of any age and experience. We just ask you to be aware of these basics before coming to compete.

Resources

If you haven't been to a competition before, we'd strongly recommend looking through all of the below resources. Although there will be a competitor tutorial at the start of the competition (see the Schedule tab), reviewing these in advance is very helpful.

Finally, note that all competitors are expected to be familiar with the WCA Regulations. Note that the resources above are meant to summarize some of the most prominent regulations, among other things.

FAQs

Q: What will the competition look like?
A: A competition usually runs throughout the whole day where cubers meet up and have fun, although you are more than welcome to stay the whole day or leave whenever. You will compete in events you have signed up for a, and when not competing you're able to hang out in the audience and interact with other cubers.

Q: Who is allowed to compete?
A: Everyone, from all ages are allowed to compete! (You just need to register within the competitor limit.) Do not be hesitant if you are not experienced with cubing or competing, we encourage newcomers to come along, we will help out.

Q: Whose cubes do I use?
A: When competing, it is ideal to use your own cube. Make sure you have one ready to go when it is time to compete. (The competition will NOT supply you with cubes to compete with.) Equipment like timers will be there to compete with.

Q: How do I check the results of the competition?
A: Check out WCA Live and search for the competition name to check live results throughout the day. Official results will then be posted within a few days of the end of the competition.

Do not be intimidated by all these rules and expectations. Competitions are for everyone to have fun! If at any time during the day you have any questions feel free to ask an organizer or other competitors!

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the organizers (see the general info tab).

See the schedule tab for when each unofficial event is taking place.

We are limiting the number of competitors in each of the unofficial events to 50 due to time and space limitations. For the parent-child solve this means 50 pairs. Both the Parent child solve and the mystery event will be held as a best of 1 to allow more people to compete. Please send an email to bitwunofficialevents@gmail.com and tell us which unofficial events you would like to sign up for. Registration will be taken on a first come first serve basis.

Mystery Event

We will announce the mystery event at the competition the day that it takes place, to give some minimal preparation time while still keeping it a surprise.

Parent-Child Team Solves

People will compete in teams consisting of a child and their parent or guardian. The child will be able to inspect their cube and give it to their parent/guardian in whatever orientation they choose, but after the parent starts the timer the child will not be permitted to touch the cube and will have to rely exclusively on communication. The child may take as much inspection time as needed. Please ensure your parent/guardian does not know how to solve a 3x3 in order to keep the spirit of this unofficial event intact and make it fun for all those participating. All relevant penalties other than going over the 15 second inspection limit will still apply such as a misalignment +2 penalty, corner twist DNF, etc.

Presentations

We will have time for 3 presentations of length 15-20 minutes each. If you would be interested in giving a presentation about anything cubing related, please email the organizers (contact info is on the main tab of this website) and provide the title of your presentation and a brief summary of what it will be about. Please do so by Sunday December 17th. We will announce which presentations will be happening a few days after that.

There will be a projector available so you can prepare slides in advance if you want, and/or you can do interactive things with the audience - it's up to you (as long as the organizers approve it). You can present as a group of 2-3 people if you'd prefer.

This competition is sponsored by TheCubicle!
Podiums in each event will receive gift card codes to be used on TheCubicle's online store after the competition.

Time limit

If you reach the time limit during your solve, the judge will stop you and your result will be DNF (see Regulation A1a4).
A cumulative time limit may be enforced (see Regulation A1a2).

Cutoff

The result to beat to proceed to the second phase of a cutoff round (see Regulation 9g).

Format

The format describes how to determine the ranking of competitors based on their results. The list of allowed formats per event is described in Regulation 9b. See Regulation 9f for a description of each format.
