We will be using Cubing Contests for live results for the unofficial events at this competition. See the Live Results tab for more information.

Competition day timing:
* The competition will begin at the scheduled start time.
* Lunch will end at the scheduled time.
* Events will begin as soon as the previous event is wrapping up. Exception: All First Round events will not start more than 20 minutes early.

Registration for unofficial events is now closed. To check your unofficial events registration, click here.

This competition will contain a variety of unofficial events: 3x3 Supersolve, Mirror Blocks Blindfolded, 3x3 Team Blindfolded, Match the Scramble, Magic, Face-Turning Octahedron, and a super secret Mystery Event! For more information on each event, see below.

These events are not sanctioned by the World Cube Association, so you will have to fill out this form to register for the unofficial events. Filling out this form does NOT give you a spot in the competition; you must also complete the form on the Register tab and pay the competition fee.

The time limits below are not final, and we may modify them depending on registration numbers.

3x3 Supersolve
Description: Competitors are given 2 3x3 scrambles a week before the competition, and can use any resources to plan out a speedsolve for each scramble.
Format: Mean of 2
Time limit: 2:00.00 per solve
Additional regulations:
- There is a 15-second inspection period, which you can use to take one last look at the cube and get it into the proper orientation.
- You can use any resources to plan out your solves. That means ANY resources, including the internet and software that generates solutions.
- We strongly encourage you NOT to discuss specific scrambles and solutions with others. However, we are not officially prohibiting this, because we can't possibly stop people from talking about scrambles that are sent out a week in advance. That being said, please do NOT discuss your solutions in public forums such as community Discord channels.

The 3x3 Supersolve scrambles are:

  1. L' D2 R2 B2 R' B2 U2 L D F D2 B2 F2 D F U2 L' B' F (visualization)
  2. U2 R L' U2 F U2 F U' F2 U F' L2 U2 R2 F L2 D' (visualization)

Mirror Blocks Blindfolded:
Description: Competitors solve a 3x3 mirror blocks cube by touch. The entire solve is blindfolded, and there is no inspection.
Format: Mean of 3
Cumulative time limit: 10:00.00
Additional regulations:
- You must use a mirror cube or a mirror blocks cube, i.e. one where every side has a different height.
- Cubes are allowed to have logos.

3x3 Team Blindfolded
Description: One competitor (caller) directs a blindfolded competitor (solver) in solving a 3x3.
Format: Best of 3
Cumulative time limit: 10:00.00
Competitor limit: 20 teams
Additional regulations:
- There is a 15-second inspection period.
- Only the solver can apply moves to the cube. The caller cannot touch the cube after inspection. Penalty: DNF.
- The caller may touch the cube during inspection.
- You are required to have a complete team when registering for the event.

Match the Scramble
Description: Competitors "solve" a 3x3 cube by matching it with a different, scrambled 3x3.
Format: Best of 3
Cumulative time limit: 10:00.00
Additional regulations:
- Competitors are required to provide 2 3x3 cubes: one for scrambling, and one for the competitor to "solve".
- There is a 15-second inspection period.
- If the "solved" 3x3 does not exactly match the scrambled 3x3 at the end of the solve, the result is DNF.
- There is no +2 penalty if the cube is off by one move; instead, the result is DNF.
- Competitors are free to touch the scrambled cube at any point during inspection and during the solve, but cannot apply moves to the scrambled cube. Penalty: DNF.

Magic
Description: Competitors solve the Magic panels, as shown in this Average of 5.
Format: Average of 5
Time limit: 30.00 per solve
Additional regulations:
- For Magic only, competitors are permitted to bring their own Speed Stacks timers, even if these timers are from older generations that are no longer allowed by the WCA Regulations. For example, if you bring a Gen2 Speed Stacks timer, you are allowed to use it for Magic, even though it is not permitted for official WCA events. This is not required, and as always, competitors may use the timers we supply.

Face-Turning Octahedron (FTO)
Description: Competitors solve a Face-Turning Octahedron.
Format: Average of 5
Cutoff: 2 attempts to get < 2:30.00
Time limit: 4:00.00 per solve
Additional regulations:
- Normal speedsolving regulations apply (including 15 seconds of inspection).

Mystery Event
Description: Nice try. It wouldn't be a mystery if you knew what it was!
Format: TBD
Additional regulations:
- All necessary equipment will be provided to competitors.

Please note: there is no 3x3x3 Cube at this competition! This competition is different from normal competitions, as most of the events are unofficial events that are not recognized by World Cube Association (WCA).

For those of you new to cubing, WELCOME!

We wanted to let you know this competition is perfectly fine for cubers of any age and experience. We just ask you know a couple things before coming to compete...

First, please be familiar with the WCA Regulations, found here:
https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/regulations/

This video will explain most of what any cuber competing for the first time will need to know; however, it is still the competitors' responsibility to be familiar with the full set of regulations.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dSuMG--wm8

If you have any questions after this video, we will be having a new competitor tutorial right before 2x2. That would be the perfect time to ask those questions and clear up any confusion.

If you are stoked to compete and ready to sign up, head over to the Register tab and fill out the information it asks for. This will help you get set up the WCA's system and one step closer to your first official solve!

Q&A:

Q: Do I use my own cube to compete?

A: YES! You are responsible for your own hardware in order to compete.

Q: What is the normal age of competitors at these events?

A: All ages are welcome, but in general competitors are between 10 and 20 years old. Don't let this stop you though, everyone can and should cube!

Q: What is the competition like?

A; Competitions are a bunch of tables where nerds like us get to sit and discuss our favorite thing, Cubes! Of course in addition there is competing, which will occupy one side of the competition hall, where you will see lots of timers flickering with contestants new personal bests. Most competitions have a break for lunch, and the competing is split up into groups, as to better organize who competes when. (Check the Groups tab and listen at the competition for more info on this.)

Q: How do I find results?

A: All results are posted on the WCA page a couple of days after the competition finishes. However, for the day of competing, go to WCA Live to find information about current events (see the "WCA Live" link at the very top of this page). This is also where you will find information about 2nd and 3rd rounds of events.

Q: Why am I not on the registration list yet?

A: Make sure you pay the registration fee to be placed on the registered list, which will also guarantee you a spot in the competition. If payment may be any issue, please contact the organizers, and we may be able to work out another payment strategy. Regardless, make sure to register by visiting the Register tab.

Q: Are there age divisions?

A: Nope! All competitors compete in the same group.

Q: Can I have fun at this event?

A: HECK YES! Cubing is amazing, and we sincerely hope you enjoy the competition!

Information: Stuff You Must Know

  • Know the regulations, show up on time, check in, and be respectful of competitors by staying 1.5 meters (5 feet) away from competition stations and not using flash photography.
  • This is an unusual competition with lots of fun unofficial events, so things are going to be a little different from typical competitions.

Unofficial Events

  • This is an unusual competition, in that most of the events are unofficial events that aren't recognized by the World Cube Association. For more information and unofficial events registration, see the Unofficial Events tab.

Pre competition:

  • READ AND UNDERSTAND THE REGULATIONS (see "Regulations", at the very top of this page). Especially if you're a first time competitor, this can potentially save you much time and grief. Particularly pay attention to Article A, 2, 3, and 10.

First steps:

  • Once you've registered via the Register tab and paid the competition fee, all you need to do is show up on time for your first event. Please check in upon arrival to receive your nametag and personal schedule. If you’re not on time and miss the last call for your group in an event, you will not be able to compete for that event. Missing any given event does not bar you from competing in subsequent events (but does bar you from competing in subsequent rounds of any events you missed).
  • You will be called up by group for each event. Groups will be sent via email before the competition. When your group is called up, bring up your solved cube to the submission table, find the cube cover with your scorecard on top of it, then place your cube and the scorecard inside the cover. Then wait in the competitor waiting area on stage to be called.

Venue:

  • The competition will be held in the Gymnasium at Andrew P. Hill High School. The address of the school is 3200 Senter Road, San Jose, CA 95111. Consult this picture to help you find the Gymnasium:

General

  • Please don't trash the venue. Make sure to clean up after yourself; it's the right thing to do.
  • No flash photography. It's very distracting to competitors.
  • Stay at least 1.5 meters away from the front edge of the competition tables. Standing too close is distracting and frequently makes it hard for staff to get to where they need to go, which slows the competition down.
  • Have a question during the competition? Please try to find the answer in the relevant tabs on this website first, then feel free to ask a staff member at the info table.

Regarding volunteering:

  • Competitors may be assigned some tasks (particularly judging), and are expected to fulfill those tasks. If you are competing in unofficial events, you will be required to judge for groups you are not competing in.
  • Even if you aren't assigned a task, we always appreciate help with judging from competitors and parents alike. Feel free to help us out if you see any stations without a judge -- just make sure you know the regulations!

FAQs

Q: When do I show up?
A: Please be at the venue and ready to compete at least 15 minutes before your first event is scheduled to begin. We may get ahead of the schedule and start rounds early.
Q: When should I leave the competition?
A: You are allowed to enter and leave the competition as you wish. If you are finished competing for the day, you do not need to stay at the competition.
Q: What do I do if I want to drop or add an event?
A: For official events (2x2 Cube, 3x3 One-Handed, Pyraminx, or Skewb): Please email us before the competition. You will not be refunded any money if you drop events. If registration has not closed and you would like to add an event, please email us. Once registration has closed, we will be unable to add events to competitors' registrations.
For unofficial events: See the Unofficial Events tab.
Q: I cannot attend this competition. What should I do?
A: If you cannot attend this competition, please contact the organizers.

If the competition fills up, competitors will be added to the waitlist in the order that they pay the registration fee.

Waitlist not yet created.

This competition will use two different websites to keep track of results throughout the competition. For the official events we will use WCA Live as usual, but for the unofficial events we will use Cubing Contests.

WCA Live (for 2x2, 3x3 One-Handed, Pyraminx, and Skewb): Link

Cubing Contests (for all unofficial events): Link

COVID SAFETY

  1. Masks that cover your nose and mouth are strongly recommended but not required.

  3. The organizing team strongly recommends to receive a COVID-19 vaccination before competing. This is not a requirement, but is encouraged for those who are eligible.

Additional rules may be added as deemed necessary by the organizers, the WCA Board, or the local or state government.

By registering for this competition you agree that you understand and will follow all the information listed above.
