6 Colour Megaminx Legality

3c) Competitors must use any colour scheme for cube puzzles, as long as the puzzles show one colour per face in solved state. For other puzzles competitors must use any variation that has the same moves, positions and solutions as the original puzzle. A 6-colour megaminx could be considered 'original', no? It's the version that mefferts sells in stores.

By that logic, wouldn't http://www.amazon.com/Executive-self-es ... B001GUWK10 be legal?
Thom (2010-07-19 09:02:45 +0000)
No, since that is a cubic puzzle.

3e) The colours of puzzles must be solid, the same per colour, and clearly distinct from other colours. On a 6 colour megaminx, yellow is not clearly disctinct from the other yellow.
Thom (2010-07-27 20:51:05 +0000)
It doesn't have to be, since they are the same colour.

I take "one color per face" to mean "12 faces, 12 colors"
Thom (2010-07-27 21:59:40 +0000)
Again, that only applies to cube puzzles.

From what I can see, a 6 color megaminx is legal at the moment, however it shouldn't continue being legal. It would be the same logic as having 3 color 3x3s being allowed. 20:42:29 <+Kirjava> S***, I shouldn't've brought this up 20:42:39 <+Kirjava> and just got a 6 colour one and set a wr Kir even knows it makes it easier to set a WR given enough time to adjust techniques to 6 colors.
Thom (2010-07-28 00:50:45 +0000)
02:48:49 <+Kirjava> 12 colour might even be better 02:48:53 <+Kirjava> BECAUSE PARITY 02:49:06 <%Eidolon> yeah 12 color megaminx is probably easier 02:49:07 <+Kirjava> I recall stefan saying he switched 02:49:14 <+Kirjava> because it's actually easier Regardless; this is irrelevant.
It doesn't have to be, since they are the same colour.[/quote:228lecdy] I understood that point as one colour per face. However: 3c) [...] For other puzzles competitors must use any variation that has the same moves, positions and solutions as the original puzzle. The number of position is different since there is a way to swap undistinguishable edges. 6 colour megaminx is not legal.

The 6 colour megaminx /is/ original. There are two sticker variations produced by mefferts and sold as the same product. There is a way to swap undistinguishable edges on an 'original' megaminx.

I think it's merely an oversight that it says "cubic" puzzles only. The intent of the regulation is to make people have a 12 colored Megaminx.

So I can use a 3-coloured Square-1? It is not cubical, you know...
So I can use a 3-coloured Square-1? It is not cubical, you know...[/quote:3ka8xten] It also doesn't have the same permutations as the original Square-1.

The regulations should certainly be clearer about this. I think it's obvious that the spirit of the law allows only puzzles where every side has a single distinct color, but the text should explicitly say this, in a way that cannot be misinterpreted.

OK, so this topic has been out for over two months. Is there something that's preventing the WCA board from clarifying the rules?
qqwref (2010-09-29 16:33:17 +0000)
I think they have other stuff to do and/or rarely check this forum except for the one month a year when we're all supposed to quickly agree on exactly what changes we want to make.
