More info for starting cubers on the site

Hello, as our sport is growing and the number of interested people increases too I had the following idea. If you meet a new person who is interested in cubing. He or she mostly likes to know about a website where he or she can find the first basic info about what the sport is, info about tournaments and info in how to begin cubing. Mostly I have to guide them to a couple of youtube videos and a diversity of websites. I thought it would be a good idea if we make the WCA homepage do as such. A page where you can find basic info and questions about how to begin cubing and how to be inrolled in official competitions. I can imagine as a starting cuber that the WCA page doesn't really do that yet and the person might loose interest because he or she has to put some searching effort in finding the info that is wanted. And maybe some small text about what benifits you have for being a cuber (I.E. hand-eye coordination, and brain excersise). This last point is with a  As an example I would like to give the world juggling federatio website: http://www.thewjf.com and http://www.speedstacks.com. The WCA page as it is is a great website but you merely can find results of competitions and the competitions that are still to come plus the regulations. I think it would be part of professionalising, commercialising and popularising our sport to make the WCA page such an inviting centre point of which every new cuber can start and find the info he wants about how to do this.

This is a good idea. I would also really like a page for each event. It wouldn't be part of the regulations, but refer to it. It would probably contain a bit of history, descriptions of the puzzle, and things for a new competitor to know about them. I felt like linking to something like this while making the SF09 site, but it doesn't exist. Note: I don't think this should be a wiki. The speedsolving wiki can handle that; this would be certified information for competitors.

I agree that it should be more like the speedstacks website. I know as cubers we look down on speedstacks, but they have done a really good job of popularizing their event. Their website is full of eye-grabbing graphics and has explanations of how their event will make you a better person, a link to a store, and even videos of top performances. I know the WCA doesn't sell anything (well... maybe we should :) ), but following their example might help increase our sport's popularity. The WCA website shouldn't be just a bland report of recent tournaments. Also, would there be any way to get a website with a smaller URL (but one that is still clearly cubing-related) and redirect to this website? Maybe the main page of speedcubing.com could redirect here one day? The current URL is a bit long to type.

That would be very catchy bob! Personally I write the URL of the WCA wrong a lot so I just end up going to speedcubing.com (my homepage) and then clicking through to the WCA website with the link on the left
