Skewb

I was just curious, so I thought I'd throw this out for discussion. Why isn't the skewb an official competition? It seems like a good candidate. 1) It's easily available to anyone from Meffert's. It's not a rare or difficult puzzle to buy. 2) It has a unique solution, so it's not like having a Tetraminx and a Pyraminx category. 3) It's a straight-forward puzzle in terms of what's solved and how it moves. 4) It's a cube! This fits in good with World Cube Association

Hi Bryan, At the moment we do not have a good mechanism to decide which events are official. We are working on that though. Beginning of this year we did a first definition of the official events. Skewb was not one of them, because it was never held in a competition. I remember that in 2004 I had one request of someone wanting to do Skewb in a competition. Thanks, Ron

I think it was me, who asked for skewb in a competition! It would be great to have it official!

Not to put the cart before the horse or anything, but I am working on a Skewb scrambler. What do people think of the following notation: For scrambling, there will only be sides FBLR. you take the Skewb and set it in front of you. You turn the Skewb slightly so that the edge of the inner square is parallel to you. To scramble F, you would grab the section that is in front of that square and turn clockwise. F' would be counter-clockwise. The top square would remain stable and all the other pieces would move around it. I know that no solutions really use this notation, but this is meant to simplify the scrambling for someone who is familiar with the standard cube and notation to be able to scramble the Skewb. The other idea I had was to maybe keep the bottom square stationary instead. Any opinions? I'll try to post the scrambler soon.

Scrambler is here: http://www.logan.cc/skewb.html The table could use a bit of work to make it look nicer. The depth of the Skewb is the same as the 2x2x2, so I used the same scramble length. It's a modification of the Pyraminx scrambler, which was a modification of Jaap's original scramblers.

Perhaps the Skewb could be competed unofficially by competitors who arrange it among themselves? Just a thought.
