Important Changes to the Recognition of Regions

Announced by Blake Thompson on

Dear WCA Community,

We are able to share some important updates regarding our organization's alignment with the international standards set by the sporting community. After careful consideration of recommendations made by a specialized working group within the WCA Sports Organization Team (WSOT), we have made the following changes to our regions, effective immediately:

Hong Kong, China (Formerly Hong Kong)
Macau, China (Formerly Macau)
Chinese Taipei (Formerly Taiwan)

Furthermore, Chinese Taipei will now operate under the WCA Chinese Taipei flag, which will be rolled out through WCA services progressively over the coming month.

We want to emphasize that this decision was not made lightly. This is purely an effort to align with the IOC’s standards. A dedicated working group has spent several months primarily focused on this matter. They have taken the time to consult with key stakeholders in the local communities and members involved in the original creation of the WCA recognized regions list. After considering the feedback from these stakeholders, the WCA Board has unanimously agreed to adopt the proposed changes put forth by the working group.

Please feel free to direct any questions or concerns to board@worldcubeassocation.org.

Note (June 24th, 2023): The WCA Board apologizes for the confusion that has arisen so far regarding this announcement. The Board and WSOT are working to consolidate the context and justifications for this decision. We expect this report to be available in the next few days.

Note (June 29th, 2023): Thank you all for your patience. Please feel free to head over to the WCA Forum, where you will find a thread with much more insight into the decision.

Kind Regards,
WCA Board of Directors
