Forum Digest (October 2023)

Announced by Lauren Clement on

Here are some notable threads on the WCA Forum during the third quarter of 2023.

Registration of the WCA as a sports organization
The WCA is currently working towards becoming a recognized sports organization. This thread discusses all doubts and queries the community raised regarding what constitutes a sport and the process of making speedcubing an officially recognized sport.

Timebase Prototype Showcase
Two cubers from the USA brought a novel implementation that gets rid of the traditional scorecards and signatures. They tested out Timebase at a few competitions they are organizing. This is a great idea and in the process of becoming a reality. It is presently not allowed as the primary source of scoretaking as per the Regulations.

Uniform Scramble Sets at Major Championships
The discussion set off after the World Championship 2023 concluded. The proposal was to enforce the same scramble sets for finals and penultimate rounds at large-sized competitions in order to have a fair selection of the winners.

Trial Rounds for Newcomers
Newcomers have a lot of problems handling the Speed Stack timers which leads to extras being given by the Delegates. This proposal discusses if having one trial solve of that puzzle at the solving station should be a mandate for newcomers.

Cube Talk Summary
The idea of starting cube talk was to get cubers conversant on the forums on most attractive questions. We have got great answers on four topics recently which are:

  • What is your favourite event?
  • Do you prefer running, judging, scrambling or scoretaking?
  • Who is your favorite WCA Delegate?
  • How do you feel about reserving competition places only for newcomers?

We hope to continue the series asking more questions to the community.
