2017 Year End Message

Announced by Lauren Clement on

Dear WCA Community,

With 2017 coming to a close, we wanted to use this opportunity to say thank you and wish you the very best for the New Year! We have experienced great developments in 2017 that we would like to share with you.

WCA competitions took place in 13 new countries and over 23,000 new competitors competed officially. At these competitions, 76 world records and 301 continental records were broken!

Some major structural changes within the World Cube Association took place, most importantly the establishment of four new committees: in April the WCA Communication Team started their work which then was joined by the WCA Financial Committee in June. Just recently the WCA Ethics Committee and the WCA Quality Assurance Committee were formed and will begin their work in the new year.

Internally, there have been 920 competition results posted by the WCA Results Team, the WCA Regulation Committee worked through 129 single commits and about 50 pull requests on GitHub to give us the most recent regulation changes, the WCA Disciplinary Committee investigated around 30 cases, the WCA Communication Team posted 82 times on Facebook, and the WCA Software Team deleted nearly a million lines of code while only adding 85 thousand to our codebase. It’s been a busy year!

We are looking forward to an even more successful year 2018 and are completing the final steps to become a registered non-profit organization. The World Cube Association wants to thank everyone involved with its development and those who work to make it a great experience for the whole community!
