Information

CubingZA is excited to announce the third Cape Town competition for 2024, and the first to be held in the Northern Suburbs! This competition will focus on a variety of shorter, popular events, with multiple rounds of 3x3, 2x2, and Pyraminx, as well as one round of 4x4 and Skewb. Don't forget that to participate you need to register for the competition in the "Register" tab, and pay for your entry. Please see Registration Requirements below.

SPECTATORS
Competitors are welcome to bring up to two spectators with them.

VOLUNTEERING
Please note that all competitors are required to assist with volunteering during the competition - either in the role of "runner", "judge" or "scrambler". These roles will be explained as part of the "New Competitor Tutorial", but you can take a look at this video.

SPONSORSHIP

A big thanks to Speedcubes who are sponsoring vouchers as a part of the prizes for this competition. They will have a stall set up at the venue for you to try out and buy the different speedcubes they have on offer.

LUCKY DRAW
During prize-giving after 3x3 Finals, we will be having a Lucky Draw for two winners to receive R250 Speedcubes.co.za vouchers each with free shipping on their order! If you needed another reason to stick around and watch 3x3 Finals other than the amazing speed of some of Africa's top speedcubers, maybe you could be one of the lucky winners and walk away with some free cubes or apparel courtesy of our local speedcubing store.

We are introducing a new payment system for our competitions going forward, and trying out tiered payments - this means that for many competitors who are newcomers or only compete in a few events like 3x3 and 2x2, competition ticket prices may decrease from previous competitions. Please see the below instructions for how to pay for your entry, and a description of this tiered pricing system.

Please note that there are THREE steps you need to take to be entered into this competition:
1. First-timer competitors must create a WCA account if they do not already have one (or their parent/guardian must create one for them).
2. The competitor must register for the competition using their WCA account, specifying which events they want to participate in.
3. The competitor must pay the Entry Fee on the CubingZA website. DO NOT PAY UNTIL YOU HAVE REGISTERED IN STEP 2 ABOVE PLEASE.
4. You may pay on the day of the competition, for an additional R30. Please bring cash or a debit/credit card.
* Entry Fee Breakdown:
* R100 - ONLY competing in 3x3
* R125 - competing in up to three events
* R150 - competing in more than three events

Payment Link

Please make sure you pay the correct amount for the number of events you are participating in! If you wish to change the events you are participating in, you must contact the delegate before the competition. If you add events, you will need to pay the extra amount if applicable. If you remove events, you will be refunded part of your entry fee if applicable. If you drop out of a specific event on the day of the competition, then we can unfortunately not give any refunds.
If you have any questions about the pricing and tickets, please contact the delegate or organizing team.

If you're a first-time competitor, we would love to have you! It doesn't matter how quickly you can solve the cube - everyone is there to have fun, make new friends, and do their best. The speedcubing community is a healthy environment for cubers of all ages!

This competition runs over two days but you don't need to attend both days. Have a look on the schedule to see when the different events are happening so you can decide what days you should attend. Make sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before Registration ends on the first day you'll be competing. This helps us with entering everyone into the system and ensures that you're on time for the New Competitor Tutorial. As a first-time competitor, you don't want to miss this as we'll be going over all the details of how to participate in this competition.

If you're on the fence about going, take a look at this video giving a bit of insight into what a cube competition is like. If you would like some more information about what to expect, take a look at:

  • this tutorial on how you'll complete your solves
  • this video on what to expect at your first competition If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the organisers - we would be happy to help!

Q. What time should I arrive at the competition?
You should arrive for registration between 07:30 and 08:15 on Saturday morning. You should always be at the venue ready to compete 30 minutes before you are scheduled.

Q. How old do I have to be to compete?
Anyone can compete at any age! We encourage anyone considering to compete to register as it will be a great experience regardless of age.

Q. How fast do I have to be to compete?
You only need to know how to solve the 3x3 cube in under 10 minutes to compete! Refer to the Events tab to see specific Time limits and Cutoffs for other events.

Q. How can I change my events?
You can change your events via the competition registration page.

Q. How can I prepare before the competition day?
Before attending you should have read and understood the WCA regulations. Here is condensed version of the competitor tutorial.

Q. What do I need to bring?
You need to bring a puzzle for each event you are signed up to compete in - make sure they are allowed per the WCA regulations. To summarise, your cube should NOT have physical damage, such as very scratched up stickers, dents, or visibly broken pieces; it should only have ONE logo; it should not have any textures or patterns (so NO "carbon-fiber" cubes); and it must not have transparent pieces. If you are unsure whether your puzzle is competition-legal, please get in touch with a delegate to check. Many competitors also bring a 'warm up cube' to use between submitting their puzzle for scrambling and starting their official solve. All timing equipment is provided.

Q. How do I find out if I've progressed to the second round?
Times will be uploaded through the day onto WCA Live. Please allow up to an hour from finishing your solves to them being uploaded. After all the times of a round have been entered, you can see if you are in the following round.

Q. Who can I ask for help on the day?
Your Delegate for this competition is Maverick Pearson. Feel free to ask any questions you may have on the day about the rules and regulations. The competition organisers are Maverick and Daniel Mizen. Ask them if you have any queries about the competition schedule, cutoffs, time limits, and advancement to subsequent rounds.

Q. Can I help on the day?
Definitely! Throughout the day we will always need judges and runners so please see our Delegates to ask how you can best assist.

Q. How can I find out about upcoming competitions in South Africa?
You can find out about upcoming competitions in South Africa by signing up on CubingZA or checking the WCA Competitions page.

Q: How do I get a WCA ID?
After official results are posted after the competitions you will receive an email with information on your WCA ID.

Please also refer to the WCA's FAQ.
