Information

After hosting the Canadian Championship in July 2023, Speedcubing Canada welcomes you back for BC's first Provincial Championship!

Note: While everybody is welcome to attend and compete, only BC residents will be eligible for the title of BC Champion. For more information, please check out the Championship Eligibility tab.

Please review all of the tabs listed on this website. You only need to show up for the events that you're competing in - but we encourage you to show up for longer. So, if you are not competing in any events being held on Friday, then you don't need to show up until Saturday. Note that we may run ahead of or behind schedule, so please be ready for each event/round about 30 minutes in advance, just in-case.

Competitor Duties

If this isn't your first competition, you will be assigned some judging and/or running duties throughout the competition. You will only be assigned these tasks in events that you're competing in.

If you don't know how to judge or run, make sure to come to the competitor tutorial at the start of the competition. These duties will be on the back of your name tag (explained in the competitor tutorial), so please be aware of when you're expected to come up and help. This is required to keep the competition running smoothly and on time, since it is purely run by volunteeers.

For non-first rounds (ie 3x3x3 round 2) there are no assigned duties, so if you see an empty judging seat then please come up and fill it.

We also ask that you keep the venue as tidy as possible as possible - please put garbage/recycling/etc in the appropriate bins when you're leaving.

If you need help or are confused about any of these duties, just ask an organizer or an experienced competitor and they can explain.

Note: We are also accepting staff applications for this competition. Dedicated staff will be expected to take on volunteer duties for the majority of the time during the competition, however, all other returning competitors will still be assigned some judging/running duties.

Welcome

For those of you new to cubing - WELCOME! This competition is fine for cubers of any age and experience. We just ask you to be aware of these basics before coming to compete.

Resources

If you haven't been to a competition before, we'd strongly recommend looking through all of the below resources. Although there will be a competitor tutorial at the start of the competition (see the Schedule tab), reviewing these in advance is very helpful.

Finally, note that all competitors are expected to be familiar with the WCA Regulations. Note that the resources above are meant to summarize some of the most prominent regulations, among other things.

FAQs

Q: What will the competition look like?
A: A competition usually runs throughout the whole day where cubers meet up and have fun, although you are more than welcome to stay the whole day or leave whenever. You will compete in events you have signed up for, and when not competing you're able to hang out in the audience and interact with other cubers.

Q: Who is allowed to compete?
A: Everyone, from all ages are allowed to compete! (You just need to register within the competitor limit.) Do not be hesitant if you are not experienced with cubing or competing, we encourage newcomers to come along, we will help out.

Q: Whose cubes do I use?
A: When competing, it is ideal to use your own cube. Make sure you have one ready to go when it is time to compete. (The competition will NOT supply you with cubes to compete with.) Equipment like timers will be there to compete with.

Q: How do I check the results of the competition?
A: Check out WCA Live and search for the competition name to check live results throughout the day. Official results will then be posted within a few days of the end of the competition.

Do not be intimidated by all these rules and expectations. Competitions are for everyone to have fun! If at any time during the day you have any questions feel free to ask an organizer or other competitors!

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the organizers (see the general info tab).

Sponsor

This competition will be sponsored by Cubing Out Loud. They will be providing gift card prizes for all Canadian podiums at the competition.

Unofficial Event

Mini Guildford Challenge

Registration for the Mini Guildford Challenge is only open to all BC residents. It will be held on Saturday, August 17 during lunch.
A "Mini Guildford" relay consists of the following events: 2x2x2, 3x3x3, 4x4x4, 5x5x5, 3x3x3 One-Handed, Clock, Megaminx, Pyraminx, Skewb, Square-1.

  • In a team of two (2), you and a partner will need to solve every event in the relay. You may both be solving at the same time.
  • You may decide with your partner who gets to solve each puzzle, and in which order.
  • This event will be a "Best of 1", meaning you will have only one attempt.
  • Together as a team, you must bring at least 1 puzzle for every event in the list.

There is enough room for the top 8 teams who register, which will be based on previous WCA results.

Standard WCA penalties may apply:
- A +2 second penalty for each puzzle that is one move away from solved.
- If a puzzle is more than one move from solved when the timer is stopped, the whole attempt will be a DNF.

Registration for the Mini Guildford challenge can be done here once competition registration has opened. Only submit one registration per team. The top 8 teams will be contacted by August 1, 2024.

If you have any questions, please contact us.

Staff Application

Please fill out this form if you would like to apply to join the volunteer staff team: https://forms.gle/Lw6vEiqNxUb9FJ8QA. All information is contained within the form.

Championship Eligibility

The title of BC Champion in each event will be awarded to the highest ranking competitor from British Columbia.

Note that title eligibility is based on residency, not citizenship. If you represent a region that is NOT Canada on the WCA, but live in BC, you may be eligible for the title of BC Champion.

You can confirm your BC residency either by filling this form before the competition, OR verbally at the check-in table during the competition. Note that you only need to do this if you expect to be the highest ranking competitor from BC in an event.

If you have any championship eligibility questions, please contact us.

Time limit

If you reach the time limit during your solve, the judge will stop you and your result will be DNF (see Regulation A1a4).
A cumulative time limit may be enforced (see Regulation A1a2).

Cutoff

The result to beat to proceed to the second phase of a cutoff round (see Regulation 9g).

Format

The format describes how to determine the ranking of competitors based on their results. The list of allowed formats per event is described in Regulation 9b. See Regulation 9f for a description of each format.
