US National Rubik's Cube Championships and Open 2009

I am having a meeting on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Stanford University to discuss the possibility of holding the US National Rubik's Cube Championships and Open 2009 at Stanford University some time in the summer. There is a discussion going on at www.speedsolving.com but I figured I would let people know what was going on here and keep people updated on the progress.

1. There's huge convention centers everywhere. But, getting many rooms costs a lot of money. Also, having enough stackmats in each room could also be an issue.
2. There are attractions in California also. Besides, when I go to competitions, I usually don't have time for attractions.
3. Except for last year, when it was in Atlanta. And the year before that, when it was in Chicago. But yeah, in 2006 it was in San Francisco, and 2004 it was in California also (although that was when the only US competitions occured in California).

If you just picked it because it was NJ and you live there, just go to the non-Nationals in the area.

4. In your home town.

If we wanted a large number of people, amusement parks, and beaches, California blows New Jersey away. And yes, as bryan said ,there are thousands of convention centers that meet those same criteria.

The sarcasm is because this is a very common occurrence. Every cuber wants [insert large competition here] to be in their home town. You're the first, though, to suggest a town which, according to Wikipedia, has a population of 5,436. On top of that, it's 50 miles from the nearest airport.

It seems these days there are a lot of younger cubers who can't convince their parents to take them to a competition, so they want the competition taken to them.

(And besides, I thought the jokes were funny)

I am also from New Jersey, but I would advise AGAINST a competition in Central or even South Jersey. The only reason why I think North Jersey would be okay is because of its accessibility (EWR, JFK, LGA). Even that, though, makes New York a much better location (if it can be afforded) than Wildwood. Sure, Wildwood is nice; I've been going there practically every Memorial Day weekend since I was born, but it's not really a good location for US Nationals. Besides, who is there to organize it? I think Stanley Wong might be the closest organizer, over 1 1/2 hours away. Having it in California will be great financially right now for the organizational team. Besides, I think California has the largest cubing population (maybe population density, too?) out of any state.

I see what your saying about California, thats the most given answer for competitions in california, especially US nationals.
it has the largest population of cubers, but what about going central possibly in 2010? its basically in east or west most of the time so why not there.

The Mall of America was looked at as a possibility (in Twin Cities, MN). Even more important than the number of cubers in CA, though, is the organizational team being mostly entirely located in CA.

He's right. Of all the people who staffed Nationals in Atlanta, I'd say 90% were from California.

What's wrong with wikipedia? I know very little about the area, so I went to a source that I knew would give me the information. And last year was located in Chicago, which is fairly central.
