Information

This competition is being held in part as a fundraiser for the Class of 2020 for Albany High School, and a portion of the proceeds of the competition will go towards the class fund.

Some cell service providers may not have service in the Albany area, so there is a possiblility GPS systems may not work properly, and a set of printed directions may be useful to have on hand when navigating to the school. The school will have WiFi available at the venue, although this has become slightly bogged down in the past due to the large number of people accessing it.

The event is being held in the Albany High School gymnasium on the south side of the building. The enterance is near a small parking lot, although this will not have enough parking for everybody. There is parking along the streets, and some additional parking along a park just east of the school.

Albany is a very small community, and food options are limited, there are no fast food restaurants in the town, and the nearest chain restaurants are in Brodhead or Evansville, which are about 10-15 minutes away. There will be a concession stand at the event, and closer to the day of the competition the menu will be posted. Food will be allowed in the gymnasium so feel free to bring your own food, but please be sure to throw your trash away so we can clean up after ourselves.

Restaurants in Albany include:
Dam Near Home
Bobana's
Gabriella's
Edgewater Cafe
Center Tavern

New Competitors:

  • We are excited you are considering Albany Fall 2019 as your first competition!
  • We encourage first time competitors to test out the timing equipment before your first attempt, feel free to ask a staff member how competing works. Before the competition, you can watch this great video made by WCA Senior Delegate for USA & Canada Kit Clement with the basics of how it all works. There is also this written tutorial on the WCA website that is very helpful.
  • The competitors will be split up into groups for competing. You will be assigned a group and you'll be informed of your group number for each event before the competition. On the day of the competition when your group number is called you bring your puzzle up and put it in the box that has a scorecard with your name on it and wait in the competitor waiting area until your name is called.
  • It's a good idea to arrive before the scheduled time for your event because if you are not there for the last call you might not be allowed to compete.
  • Read the "All Competitors" information below.

All Competitors:

  • Be familiar with the WCA Regulations specifically Article 2 and Article A
  • Flash photography is not allowed because it is very distracting to people while they are solving.
  • You may NOT talk about the scrambles of an event while it is still in progress.
  • Make sure all screens of any cameras or phones you have on the table are facing away from you otherwise this will result in a DNF
  • Please treat the venue with respect, pick up any trash keep track of your puzzles.
  • We will do our best to retain the cutoffs and time limits as listed. The organizers/delegate reserve the right to make the limits stricter ahead of an event only as needed to maintain the schedule. Any changes will be announced ahead of their respective rounds.
  • We will have heat and judging sheets posted around the competition venue, each competitor is expected to judge the group after they compete, if you compete in the last group of an event, you should judge for the first group. You my help with running or judging in any group you are not competing in though if you want to help the competition run smoothly. All volunteer help is greatly appreciated!

Huge thanks to The Cubicle for sponsoring this competition! They will be providing gift cards to their store to competitors who get top 3 in the final round of each event.

Time limit

If you reach the time limit during your solve, the judge will stop you and your result will be DNF (see Regulation A1a4).
